If you have been feeding black-oil sunflower and suddenly switch to straight safflower, birds will abandon your feeders. Safflower is not the favorite food of house sparrows, red-winged blackbirds and squirrels. I’m just beginning to use a feeder and am surprised by how quickly the House Sparrows seem to decimate it.

Swarming around my neck, ears, and hair, they forced me to abandon birding altogether as I swatted them away as best I could. Eurasian Tree Sparrows frequently find themselves out in the wild without a glass to drink from. A surprising stronghold for Willow T**s in the UK is at abandoned coal mining sites – maybe they should thank Margaret Thatcher for her help in creating these sites.
