Anyone who dares fill bird feeders in the hopes of actually, you know, feeding birds knows well the menace hungry squirrels present. Entire industries are built around preventing squirrels from completely devouring provisions intended for birds. Do you have shots of not-exactly-flying squirrels you’d like to share?

If you have been feeding black-oil sunflower and suddenly switch to straight safflower, birds will abandon your feeders. Safflower is not the favorite food of house sparrows, red-winged blackbirds and squirrels. I also use the weight sensitive “squirrel proof&# feeders to keep them out of my sunflower seed.

Over the pass, trees turn to pines – one very dark Eurasian Red Squirrel in them – and peaks around us become much higher. Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people. A Willow Tit feeds on thistle by the side of the road.

The thought of an Oriole foraging in bare winter branches is as foreign as a Petrel on a pool and yet, there it was in my yard picking through an abandoned squirrel’s nest for what appeared to be spiders. They are, for many birders in the eastern part of the continent, one of a short list of quintessential spring birds.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. When that isn’t possible, many raptor rehabbers keep tabs on nests and will place an abandon chick in a foster nest.

Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. And outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a dog rescued an abandoned baby by placing him safely among her own newborn puppies. Jethro and the Bunny.
