Watching a Red-tailed Hawk nest

The first year, the female sat on the nest from the beginning of March to the end of May before abandoning the nest. In my next column, I will share more of my observations about the hawk family. But I took an opportunity to go down to Manitoba with Travis to see my family. Most troubling for me, because I think of them as my birds, is the abandoned nesting attempt by a pair of Pacific Loons. Better times: Pacific Loon family from two seasons ago. To start off I was away for a couple of weeks.

It’s a family vacation, sure, but there’s always time for birding and in Florida, the birding often finds you. You can tell which abandoned lots host owls by a small roped off area with the tell-tale t-bars that the owls perch upon. I’ve spent the last week in southwest Florida.

But as point and shoots have changed and don’t quite work as well with scopes, some people abandoned the idea or others (like myself) embraced it and paid for more expensive single lens reflex cameras for better photos. As much as I enjoy the better photos I got with my scope by using an SLR, I missed having a compact multi-use camera.

I have encountered a few of the more quirky members of the family, including the brilliant and aptly-named African Emerald Cuckoo, India’s ultra-shy Sirkeer Malkoha, and the fascinating Lesser Ground Cuckoo in Costa Rica. It reminded me of a Roadrunner, which is, of course, also a member of the cuckoo family.
