The Brown Pelican occurs in both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America and northern South America. Both pelicans have a very specialized foraging strategy that depends on abundant fish near the surface. They dive-plunge to scoop-in fish in schools with its long bill and expandable throat pouch.

While the native apple snail continued declining, another species of apple snail native to South America began to appear in canals and ponds in South Florida. They feed on insects stirred up by the herds, at times sitting on the animal itself picking off ticks and other insects. But while their range expansion in the old world was made up of relatively short hops no one expected this species to move westward across the Atlantic Ocean to South America but it did just that!
