Scores of abandoned dogs, cats and livestock from Utah animal shelters become subjects of laboratory research at the University of Utah each year. An abstract of a scientific paper reads as follows (unabridged): “External examination of free range abandoned dead Greater Coucal in a veterinary dispensary, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India revealed presence of a large sized louse in the feathers and was identified as Laemobothrion maximum on the basis of morphology and size of the louse.”

Paving of the road across the Reva Pond started and was abandoned several months later: only the sidewalk was paved. You can probably understand the disappointment of a herpetologist friend of mine when he discovered that his very research transect was now paved. Yet, the site is quite ruined. I’d rather not discuss my disappointment.

Up to 100 kg – possibly a female, my guide and a bear researcher from the wildlife charity Callisto, Yannis Tsanakis, tells me. Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people. At the same time, a Peregrine Falcon flies across the valley.

Patrol and enforce wildlife-damaging violations, including the taking of endangered native plants, capturing turtles, riding ATV’s on pedestrian trails, and abandoning fishhooks. They wrote books and published research. Remove Phragmites and replace it with cattails. Mow grasslands only once a year to arrest succession.

There is a photo of him caring for a White-chinned Sapphire in the book, the only human pictured in Dunn’s 16-page collection of hummingbird photographs, and it is inspiring. I would also love to have more documentation of the many books, articles, research points, and stories that Dunn relates, at the very least a list of sources.
