I’ve never quite understood why so many people wrap their scopes up in little jackets, (but nor do I understand why it’s so popular to dress dogs up in coats, too, as they are already wrapped in fur. Perhaps it’s a basic human desire to dress things up.) A pair of Sarus Cranes , digiscoped at Baratphur, India.

They are solitary, and their roosting habits may be the reason for their frosted fur and (relatively, for a bat) high-contrast patterns of coloration – in the open, with no safety to be had in numbers, they need to blend with lichen and break up their outlines to avoid predation during the day. Hoary Bats roost in trees, not caves.

Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species. None of the three voyagers made landfall due to poor weather and dangerous conditions.

Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. I wondered what in the world he’d brought back and discovered the wet ball of fur was a very young bunny. And outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a dog rescued an abandoned baby by placing him safely among her own newborn puppies.
