Over a few obstacles, we follow the dirt track into an abandoned and overgrown claypit. Yet, Starlings cannot dig and are happy to use abandoned cavities. The other day, I came at 5.40 am with an ornithologist friend of mine by his Lada 4×4. The Touareg is parked, but no one is to be seen.

Officials reported 48 marine mammals, mostly dolphins, and 87 dead sea turtles during the first two months alone. We documented the relocation of several turtle nests. Turtles continue to die at significant rates in the Gulf of Mexico. The babies that hatched from these eggs were released on Florida’s east coast.

When that isn’t possible, many raptor rehabbers keep tabs on nests and will place an abandon chick in a foster nest. A lone gosling or duckling is vulnerable to all sorts of predators like raptors, bass, herons, fox, snapping turtles and foxes (just to name a few). Birds of prey look cool, but they can’t count.

Patrol and enforce wildlife-damaging violations, including the taking of endangered native plants, capturing turtles, riding ATV’s on pedestrian trails, and abandoning fishhooks. Remove Phragmites and replace it with cattails. Mow grasslands only once a year to arrest succession.
