Lake Kerkini National Park in the north of Greece is the very best birding area in the Balkan Peninsula and definitely among the top ten hotspots of Europe. We also observed nests of Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian Pelicans , Little Egrets , Cattle Egret (with a chick), Squacco Heron , and Spoonbills.

I am checking the grass for any flash of white and soon my suspicion is confirmed: Cattle Egrets (cover photo)! My definition of Heaven clearly involves a place hot as Hell, but with so many birds one has to shovel them away to clear the path. Could they possibly be…? And I know I am in Heaven.

Another puzzling thing to me, as for me, the ideal number of people to live with would be somewhere between zero and one but definitely not above 1. According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. End of side note. No wonder it looks a bit pissed off.

If I was an ornithologist aiming for a grant, I would now definitely highlight the need for more research on this topic. When there are no animals around to sit on, Cattle Egrets sometimes sit on trees, even though they frequently b h about the trees’ low speed and inability to stir up insects.
