The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage.

But its not just parrots that are doing well in their adopted city. Some uncountable species, like Mitred Parakeets , are in fact way more numerous than some of the countable species and they are clearly breeding in well-established populations. Nanday or Black-hooded Parakeets have recently been accepted as countable by the ABA.

They don’t even take their tucked-in heads out, a position some resting ducks adopt, when people approach them to distances of only a few meters. White-faced Whistling Ducks are widespread in hot and humid habitats of eastern South America. Later, it was brought up that the now famous ducks appear not to mind the presence of humans.

Outside of the breeding season a few birds may join together in a loose flock if the feeding is good. The nom de blog Redgannet was adopted to add an air of mystery and to make himself more attractive to women. To describe the back as grey makes it sound very drab, but in good light it takes on a bluish hue. Great shots!

The Black Swans were adopted to the trust’s coat of arms and breed here during the northern winter. A Ringed Teal (more likely to be seen in South America than Kent) caused a stir when it followed the river downstream and showed up in Mote Park.
