This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version. Long before that time Mexican domesticated Turkeys had been adopted by Native Americans in the American Southwest as well. Bringing animals that would require feed and water at that early stage would have been unwise.

The kiwi (note, Maori loanwords do not get an ‘s’ when made plural) were first used as logos in the 19th century, and were quickly adopted as a a national emblem before the turn of the century. Searching for kiwi is unlike spotlighting that I’ve done while looking for nocturnal animals in the past.
