There is a bit of a drama around the adoption of the Portuguese (yay!) Others are accusing him of getting a dog from a breeder. He came from a breeder and did not have a successful first placement, but his is nowhere near the tough stories we hear about in shelters. But he wasn't really adopted from a breeder either.

Early Adopter. The Shift: Instead of buying your new friend from a pet store or breeder, adopt one from a shelter. Save the Planet: Adopting a shelter pet not only saves a life, but it reduces demand for purebred animals, which are more likely to have medical problems due to genetic abnormalities. Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? Would it matter?" This is why I didn't campaign for a greyhound--it raises their profile. That's what I'd like to think.

Prominent New York thoroughbred breeder and owner Ernie Paragallo was convicted Wednesday of mistreating dozens of malnourished horses on his Hudson Valley farm. Most of the horses were eventually adopted by other horse farms around the nation, but several were in such poor shape they had to be euthanized. And he didn't know?

After negotiating with the owners of one of these kennels, the team, including Cesar, is able to rescue 11 dogs considered worthless by breeders — a small start in their hope to save as many dogs as possible from these conditions. Entertainer Sharon Osbourne even adopts one of the rescued pups!

They can say that the puppy was needing to be re-homed, therefore it's like adopting from a rescue group. But I didn't campaign for a presidential greyhound for exactly the same reason Obama's decision was disappointing: it glorifies pure breed dogs.
