The islands were purchased by the United States from Denmark in 1916. Although most conservation research focuses on northern breeding grounds, many ABA Area birds spend most of the year elsewhere. The Puerto Rican Parrot and its captive-breeding program has been extensively studied, as has the Pearly-eyed Thrasher, among others.
