Choosing to adopt a dog rather than get one at the pet store (or what some like to refer to as “puppy mill”) is a beautiful thing—essentially you are saving a poor pup from euthanasia and you’re providing a an animal with a good home. But adopting a pet is a huge responsibility and is very similar to adopting a child.
I'm a dues-paying member of both groups but, while I support euthanasia when it is CLEARLY an act of mercy, I come down pretty hard on Best Friends' side here. And the dogs deserve a happy life after all the suffering they have been through (two of them have already been adopted.)
Horses that are too old or not adoptable by the public are sent to long-term holding facilities. The agency has said the costs of keeping horses in the holding facilities has caused officials to consider euthanasia as a last resort. The bureau now has about the same number of animals in holding facilities as on the range.
Unfortunately, a recession also means that less people are adopting from or donating to shelters. And this all leads to the most unfortunate outcome, euthanasia. And limited public funding means that shelters have to rely on public donations to bear the brunt of rising costs for care and housing of these animals.

To the Editor: The euthanasia of more than 1,000 dogs and cats at the main animal shelter in Las Vegas is surely a major tragedy in the sheltering field (news article , Feb. 16), and the rapid spread of diseases at a facility packed with 1,800 animals required swift action to prevent even more suffering and loss of life.
The event is to be held at Pacha on Thursday, October 22, 2009, and all funds raised will benefit the city’s broad rescue, shelter and adoption services. Accessorized with professional models, watch a variety of happily-adopted animals strutting their stuff as they compete for the “best in show” on the runway.
