They can say that the puppy was needing to be re-homed, therefore it's like adopting from a rescue group. But I didn't campaign for a presidential greyhound for exactly the same reason Obama's decision was disappointing: it glorifies pure breed dogs.

Just in case you were wondering what an 85-lb red fawn greyhound looks like from the back with a couple dozen acupuncture needles in him. As for Project Treadstone, there have been three fatalities-by-automobile and one litter of three kittens, two of whom were caught and adopted fairly early. I've had those. My poor boy.

But one area that continues to provide them is the fight against the use of greyhounds as a source of entertainment (and gambling revenue) by forcing them to race. Some get adopted into great homes. But for me, the number of adopted dogs doesn't make up for the fact that we have no right to breed dogs to use them as gambling chips.

No playing with little white dogs, which isn't uncommon for greyhounds. He was 85 pounds (large for a greyhound), very muscular (odd for a greyhound) and spectacularly gorgeous, with Pharaoh Hound-like ears. We adopted Violet to give her a safe and loving home. Far more than a diabetic greyhound.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.

When we adopted Violet Rays we knew she was diabetic and we chose her because we were told she was unlikely to be adopted (and had already been returned) and was living in a crate all day and night, just like at the track but at someone's house instead. I'd love to think that I'll encounter a greyhound in a couple of years who will have a familiar look in his eye and I'll adopt him and care for him until the day he dies, as I did with Charles. The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. She was adopted immediately, but returned almost as quickly because the people didn't realize how inconvenient diabetes can be. There she is. She has beaten the odds and made it another year. If they've raced, you subtract a year for each year of racing.

So when we adopted a human baby we knew we'd have to teach that human to avoid Violet. We weren't planning to adopt another. but a friend who volunteers for a rescue group told me of a greyhound event around the corner from my house. If Violet can be said to love anyone, it's other greyhounds. And she does. Enter Stanley.

On Friday, June 25, I received a call from an attorney who said a little girl was born the evening prior, her adoption fell through and she needed a family. Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. And on Sunday, June 27, we brought her home!
