This is my darling 83-pound red fawn greyhound, Charles Hobson Booger, III who has been lame for about a year. They can say that the puppy was needing to be re-homed, therefore it's like adopting from a rescue group. But I didn't campaign for a presidential greyhound for exactly the same reason Obama's decision was disappointing: it glorifies pure breed dogs.

I'd love to think that I'll encounter a greyhound in a couple of years who will have a familiar look in his eye and I'll adopt him and care for him until the day he dies, as I did with Charles. When we adopted Violet Rays we knew she was diabetic and we chose her because we were told she was unlikely to be adopted (and had already been returned) and was living in a crate all day and night, just like at the track but at someone's house instead. And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.

Just in case you were wondering what an 85-lb red fawn greyhound looks like from the back with a couple dozen acupuncture needles in him. As for Project Treadstone, there have been three fatalities-by-automobile and one litter of three kittens, two of whom were caught and adopted fairly early. I've had those. My poor boy.

The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. She was adopted immediately, but returned almost as quickly because the people didn't realize how inconvenient diabetes can be. There she is. She has beaten the odds and made it another year. If they've raced, you subtract a year for each year of racing.

So when we adopted a human baby we knew we'd have to teach that human to avoid Violet. We weren't planning to adopt another. but a friend who volunteers for a rescue group told me of a greyhound event around the corner from my house. If Violet can be said to love anyone, it's other greyhounds. And she does. Enter Stanley.

On Friday, June 25, I received a call from an attorney who said a little girl was born the evening prior, her adoption fell through and she needed a family. Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. And on Sunday, June 27, we brought her home!
