Did you know that every year, of the 8 million dogs and cats that enter animal shelters, 3 million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized? Luckily, The Shelter Pet Project hopes to change this! The campaign has one unified goal, to increase pet adoption. It is such a sad statistic.

If you’re planning on adding a dog to your family, it’s possible you’ll find your new family member at the local animal shelter or humane society. These dogs are homeless through no fault of their own, and by rescuing one of them, you may just save their life. If cash is tight, choose a smaller dog that is less expensive to maintain.

Purina ONE® beyOnd® brand dog and cat food and GOOD have teamed up to host the Shine a Light on a Shelter challenge and award a $10,000 grant to an animal shelter doing great work. Do you know of a shelter that is doing good work on behalf of homeless pets? Nominations are accepted now through July 30, 2012.

Rock & Rawhide , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to increase adoptions for dogs and cats in shelters by providing toys and other items that serve as a form of distraction therapy, reducing the stress and noise levels. Research has shown that if noise and stress are reduced, adoptions go up!

While many animal shelters already struggle on a day-to-day basis to care for the millions of unwanted animals that are dropped at their door, the numbers have grown to an almost unmanageable degree over the last few years. The culprit for this surge in animal homelessness is a testimonial to these trying times: human homelessness.

Purina ONE has teamed up with Martha Stewart to visit animal shelters from San Francisco to NYC throughout the month of February. At each stop, Purina ONE will give out free Purina ONE dog and cat food to all attendees (11,000 bags across the nation), and also host adoption events at local shelters.
