KWWC captures injured, sick or orphaned wild chickens, then adopts them out to homes on the mainland. It turns out that back when cigar manufacturing was big in the Keys, Cuban laborers arrived with their chickens. Eventually the business and the workers moved to Tampa, leaving a sizable chicken population behind.

Officially adopted as the state bird in 1949 , the Greater Roadrunner was once known as the “Chaparral Bird.” Rattlesnakes are fair game, as are other reptiles, scorpions, frogs, birds, and insects. However, in real life Greater Roadrunners are quite different.

And for rodents and reptiles as well. Be prepared to take one (or several) in and work towards removal and adoption. The birds, reptiles, and rodents they would kill would have been killed, in some cases, by something else, but by something that is supposed to be there. Let me tell you this: They are. They are invasive species.

Occasionally a chick will fall and be released back into the food chain by the alligators, but on the whole, the birds get a good deal providing that they build their nests beyond the jumping capability (as much as 5 feet as demonstrated in the “Jumperoo Show&# ) of the reptiles.
