It’s tough to make out what species the baby bird is but it sure likes bluegrass. No worries – it was adopted and cared for by a veterinarian in the audience. If bluegrass isn’t your thing the fun starts at the minute-and-a-half mark of the video. As for the bird? … a.
Last weekend I ended up spending some time with a few Glossy Ibises at a nearby wetland here on Trinidad and it got me thinking about some of the other ibis species I’ve managed to see. They are the most widespread ibis species, occurring in every continent except Antarctica. Glossy Ibis.
Case in point, my best bird of the year so far, at least in terms of my state and county lists, manifested in the form of two ridiculously unlikely Swallow-tailed Kites who have adopted improbable momentary residence in the Rochester area. The post Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of August 2020) appeared first on 10,000 Birds.
I had not previously considered a situation where the two species might come into conflict, but I bet it would be a real money-spinner on pay-per-view. I dare say a jab from the Willet might quickly have put an end to the bout, but it had adopted a passive strategy and taken a points defeat in this round.
The Green Heron ( Butorides virescens ) is a spectacular species familiar to anyone who pays attention to the places where water meets land. While Butorides spans the globe, it is either recognized as a single species called Green-backed Heron or as three distinct species, the aforementioned New World heron B.
The Purple Swamphen now is considered a superspecies, with each of its six races are designated full species – and in the strange world of birding, a superspecies is rather less than a species, not more. This is despite the most likely African origin of the species. Swamphen yes, but Grey-headed? Again: Grey-headed?
I love to see the new growth on our dozens of oak species. As so often happens when I go birding, I was adopted by a couple of local dogs. In contrast, we receive many winter migrant species.) Since our summer monsoon season finally began, we have had 31 days with rain, and only 7 without. I am now their new bestie.
This form is thought to be a different species and the name Golden-bellied Woodpecker has been adopted by some. The accepted popular name may be woodpecker, but like so many birds, it has a few pet names used by those who are familiar with the species.
In May 1992 European Union governments adopted legislation designed to protect the most seriously threatened habitats and species across Europe. This legislation is called the Habitats Directive and complements the Birds Directive adopted in 1979. Noudar has recorded 184 different species since 1999.
Adopted as the state bird in 1948 , the Carolina Wren actually superseded another species: the Northern Mockingbird. Still, it’s important to note that when you hear the loud song of a wren, you are hearing the male; unlike other wren species, only males sing with high volume.
Here, for example, is the emblem of Italy, adopted by the Italian Republic in 1948. Sadly for Italy, the Italian Wolf is not considered a full species by any scientists. The lack of a national bird is not because Italy has a paucity of birds or a lack of interest in symbols.
New World populations of the widely distributed Sandwich Tern ( Thalasseus sandvicensis ) are treated by some authorities (including the British Ornithologists’ Union) as a distinct species: Cabot’s Tern ( T. Proposal 2013-A-3 recommends adopting that split on the basis of a 2009 study (I wrote about it back in the day here ).
This seems like a strange – but welcome – turn of events after having failed to see this species several times in the region. It initially ran off, but then adopted a different strategy by crouching on the ground and relying on its camouflage, its big eyes looking up at me.
The week on the cusp between March and April was the first week in which failed to pick up any FOY species for the year 2022. This following week, in which I did take a longer trip, I again picked up four FOY species.). Extra points to these American Avocets for adopting a different pose for each numbered group.
Fitz used his free time to observe the many hummingbirds in his mother’s flower garden and soon, with the help of the internet he was able to identify the various species. His interest soon grew to include other species of birds developing a love for wildlife and especially bird photography.
Up to the mid-20th century, Pygmy Cormorant was a common breeding species of wetlands around Belgrade until most wetlands were drained and the birds were lost, at one moment – from the entire territory of Serbia. With the construction of the huge Iron Gates dam on the Danube, the birds returned to breed in newly flooded river islands.
In my case, I had to format my excel sheet just so, a considerable task because when I dabbled in Birdstack (gone, alas, but not forgotten) I adopted its formatting as well as the more fluid International Ornithological Congress (IOC) taxonomy , both of which were inimical to that of eBird.
There are two species, rather conservatively named the Southern Giant Petrel and, the star of today’s show, the Northern Giant Petrel. When dealing with competitors on the beach they adopt a wings out position known as the beachmaster, similar to what I saw these squabbling birds doing out at sea.
Yep, those two guys identified 331 species in one small area, sans vehicle. Can you imagine even identifying more than 250 species while walking and using a canoe in one day? Essentially, their record was broken in 1986 by Terry Stevenson and John Fanshawe when they recorded 342 species during one calendar day in Kenya.
Because this group is so rich in species, so readily able to exploit a wide range of environments and food sources, debates about how to classify these birds have smouldered for decades. John Boyd adopts what he calls a “compromise phylogeny” of 10 families , noting that uncertainty remains. Barker et al.
Still others say that Thayer’s Gull , Iceland Gull , and Kumlien’s Gull are all a single species and we all are kidding ourselves by pretending otherwise. The AOU is bound to change its position as more authors independently adopt a taxonomy recognizing that Thayer’s is a form of the Iceland Gull. Does your head hurt yet?
Our church “adopted” them, finding them a place to live, and making sure they would have food, kitchen equipment, winter clothing, and all the other things they would be unlikely to bring. I told Ricardo we might see 50 species or more in one day, which would apparently be extraordinary in his native land.
Black-tailed Trogon ( Trogon melanurus) Mainly a species of the Amazonian lowlands (two other disjunct populations exist from central Panama to northern Colombia and in western Ecuador and northwestern Peru) they are heard more often than seen as they tend to remain well above the ground, favoring the forest canopy to subcanopy.
Virtually overnight, the Whinchats had disappeared and were replaced by European Stonechats adopting the same positions on vantage points across the island. Together with Little , Rustic , Common Reed , Ortolan , and Lapland Buntings , this amounted to an impressive six bunting species recorded in September.
Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. For reasons that are not quite clear, this species underwent a massive range expansion. In the east, this species can be found along the east coast of Africa, the Nile Valley, and into parts of the middle east and India and southeast Asia.
BirdLife Cyprus noted that, “The three-day conference dealt with illegal bird killing across Europe, and emphasis was given to the problem of poisoning, which affects many bird species in many countries (including the Griffon Vulture in Cyprus). Kingfisher on a limestick (Credit: Hüseyin Yorganc?)
The HBW reports that until recently several subspecies were commonly recognized, notably brevipes , ocularis , micronesiae , minima , leucophrys , meeki and tannensis , but that the differences are slight and the species is now treated as monotypic. Bird information does not get much more irrelevant than this.
I’ve written before about how much I enjoy the abundance of Pine Siskins in my adopted home. The two species share not only a general look (all Pine Siskins tend to take more after the streaky female Eurasian Siskin) and many habits of diet and behavior, but similar wandelust.
With help from NASA and the National Science Foundation, eBird information is being combined with satellite and climate data to create distribution models for roughly 400 species.
In my adoptive country of Mexico, however, site discovery is not only possible, but necessary. In my case, fully half of the eBird hotspots within an hour of my city of Morelia that have more than 100 species registered were my discoveries, and I had a hand in increasing the species list for almost my nearby sites.
Perhaps where the form asks if I have ever indulged in criminal or terrorist activities, or whether I have more than $10,000 in negotiable monetary units, they should include a section inquiring as to my thoughts on the new classification and sequence of genera and speciesadopted for gulls of the subfamily Larinae.
In the early days of eBird (you know, 3 or 4 years ago), I would carry a notepad in my pocket when I was birding, carefully noting the species and occasionally the numbers of birds I was seeing at a given location. My notebooks, previously carefully and meticulously entered immediately upon returning home, started piling up. Enter BirdLog.
Nearly 70 species of parrots have been recorded flying free at some stage or another in Miami, including Hyacinth Macaws. But its not just parrots that are doing well in their adopted city. Dozens of other introduced bird species, largely escapees from pet owners, now call Miami home. I suspect that it is just this. Reluctance.
Due to the large number of specialty and range-restricted species it is a must-visit destination for any South African birder who wants to surpass the 800-mark of a Southern African life-list. End result – precious birding time lost and 43 adopted African kids. An incredible close encounter with this magical cat species.
And so, these goats ate the flora of the island: unique species of Indian paintbrush and woodland star, bushmallow and wirelettuce and morning glory. And so, most had been neutered, adopted out to soft-hearted landowners as odd pets, conversation pieces. Also, they were infested by a species of ear mite unknown to science.
Fortunately for me, my adoptive land of Mexico is rich in, precisely, double-hyphenates. Among our bird groups with many such species are the Wood-Partridges, Quail-Doves, Ant-Tanagers, Forest-Falcons, and Tody-Flycatchers. The juvenile Green-striped Brush-Finch is drab enough that you might think the species was nothing special.
His overall expertise on the biological diversity of his adopted state led him inevitably to an appreciation not only of the Whooping Crane , but also the more common, smaller, but no less fascinating Sandhill Crane. As the subtitle implies, this appreciation drives the bulk of A Chorus of Cranes: The Cranes of North America and the World.
We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. Will the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) conference delegates up-list them to Appendix I of the Convention, forbidding any future sale over international borders? I say they were butchered, face-off.
Combined with Christmas Bird Counts and (relatively) lavish year-end vacation time here in North America, the result is a time when we celebrate owls , finches , and sea ducks ; when the local corvids are cheerfully ticked again; when feeders are filled and the odd overwintering individuals from some surprising species are documented.
But the honeyguides, indigobirds, and a single species of duck all do the classic cuckoo strategy (obligate interspecific brood parasitism) as well. It’s easy to see why some birds adopt this way of life.
When I was a new birder, I adopted Pillar Point Harbor near Half Moon Bay as a “patch.”. According to eBird, there have been approximately 270 species seen at the hotspot that includes the harbor. Before I moved north to Portland, I lived in San Francisco. Sequoia Audubon Society has an excellent overview of the hotspot.)
Navarro’s exceptional drawings illustrate the species accounts. Forty-eight species. Compare, for example, the species account illustration of the Cuban Trogon with the photo that opens up the introductory chapter. The luxury of space means that each species can be shown from various angles and in distinctive poses.
Thankfully the days of visiting Africa purely for slaughtering its wildlife have mostly come to a merciful end, and safari operators have adopted the Big Five term to market tours that offer sightings of the fortunate remanants of Africa’s once teeming great herds.
It's a TLC show about humans that adopt monkeys and treat them as their children. Monkey business is big business in the United States, where some people pay up to $5,000 to adopt a monkey of their own, often a capuchin monkey, which can grow up to 22 inches and 9 pounds. Thanks to Chimpanzee Information for pointing this travesty out.
