Hornbills of South Africa

10,000 Birds

But for now, I still have the hornbills I saw in South Africa a few years ago. When breeding, the female finds a cavity in a tree and seals the entrance. As the female similarly relies on the male to feed it during incubation (being locked in a cavity), the death of the male is a major reason for breeding failure.

Avian squatters at the end of Europe

The Cuckoo Cuculus canorus has a bad reputation because of its habit of laying its eggs on the nests of other birds, who then raise their young. But their endangered status is belied by the fact that they are one of the easiest rare birds to find in Africa.

Cyprus Delights – Part III

10,000 Birds

Perhaps the most curious thing about the Great Spotted Cuckoo is its distribution, for it is both a non-breeding Palearctic migrant to Africa, and a trans-Africa migrant. I wonder whether birds that breed in Europe ever meet up with those nest in southern Africa?

Terror on the moors

But no, my story today is about the birds that come in to breed on the heather moorland which dominates the high ground. So is that of the Common Redshank Tringa totanus , another breeding species of these moors. Never a better time to see them in full breeding dress.

Africa’s endangered species

10,000 Birds

All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction.
