Birding and Safari-ing South Africa with the ABA

10,000 Birds

And so, I went on the American Birding Association Safari to South Africa. That was easily fixed by adding a post-Safari trip to Eastern South Africa, led by dashing Rockjumper guide Clayton Burne, to my itinerary. They range from the successful eradication of feral cats from Marion Island (hear that, Corey?)

The Rose-ringed Parakeets of Heidelberg

10,000 Birds

The Rose-ringed Parakeet naturally occurs in two isolated areas: a thin strip across Africa just south of the Sahara, and south Asia where it is mostly found in India with smaller ranges in adjacent countries. and the White Storks are also wild and countable despite breeding at the zoo. 26 Hours in Dubai

10,000 Birds

On the ground we saw large numbers of Red-wattled Lapwings and White-tailed Lapwings , the latter of which breed at the site. Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters are something of a speciality, breeding here before flying off to Africa for the winter. The location was a good spot to see Arabian Oryx, a species I hoped to see but didn’t.
