Our group got to see another species that is a master of camouflage on our trip for the Honduran Emerald. I had seen Thick-Knees in South Africa, but I was very excited to see this species, which is the only member of its family found in Central America. Later on, we saw a second one that was actually moving!

We have several of the cuckoo species around the Broome area and all cuckoos are more likely to be heard than seen, but every now and again you get lucky! All other cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and let them raise them. At 28-33cm they are one of the larger cuckoos. Pallid Cuckoo.

Kind of an innocent version of tropical China, but I guess that is a rather naive view … Most birders coming here presumably do not have babblers as their main targets, even though there are quite a few species here, and some of them are quite attractive as well. It has the repetitive single note call that birders familiar with Africa would associate with a tinkerbird. There are simply no middle gears for this species. I’ve been told its one of the hardest species to photograph here, so I am quite proud! It’s looking at me and not flying off! Looking around.

Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa – it was established in 1895. A study has shown that they make false alarm calls when seeing other species such as meerkats with attractive food. They are being parasitized by indigobirds which also use other host species.

In southern Africa, there are two species. The Spotted Thick-knee , Burhinus capensis is, is found across much of Africa, favouring open country and is perfectly suited to the dry sandy ground of the cape region, where this individual would almost certainly have been overlooked were it not for its bright yellow legs, eyes and bill.

In the High Arctic we find several migrating species that break that mould. They also migrate to and from the High Arctic, crossing the Atlantic to Europe, but they keep going, down across the Mediterranean into Africa. This tiny passerine winters in Africa, places like Tanzania, Nigeria, Somalia.

Given the complexity of the research, the result feels like a bit of a letdown – “northern populations start migration earlier than southern populations, especially in autumn” The species name of the Chestnut-eared Bunting is fucata , from the Latin “fucare”, to paint red. Better safe than sorry.
