One in November 2018 included a one-day birding trip in the Drakensberg area, a mountain range in the border area between South Africa and Lesotho. My response was to start looking for some portable guide to take with me into the field, and that need was fulfilled by the Birds of Southern Africa illustrated checklist by Ber van Perlo, published by HarperCollins. It is not a concept for a total beginner, more of a reminder to someone with some experience.

I’m not sure if this is exclusively my limited experience, let me know! It must’ve just returned from Subsaharan Africa a few days earlier I assume. While experiments have shown that some birds (like crows and parrots) can count, this rule unsurprisingly did not hold when subjected to testing.

I birded savannas of Southern Africa, I birded India and Central America, and I always missed having a local mammal guide with me. Yes, field guides to other groups of organisms, as there’s hardly any room left in your baggage or the energy to carry it. Yet, those bird guides are hefty. Larger species, that is, excluding dolphins and whales.
These areas, as well as being famous for the afore-mentioned near-endemics, are also home to long isolated populations of birds otherwise only found in East Africa to the north and South Africa to the south. I can speak from experience that this place should only be accessed by a 4 x 4 vehicle.
