It’s quite amazing how birds that we are used to seeing much of the year on coastal mudflats, exploiting the intertidal, change their habits and take to the hills to raise their young. Two of them will be familiar to anyone that has birded in Africa (and possibly further afield), the Egyptian Goose and Helmeted Guineafowl. This Cape Francolin was raising a family less than a hundred metres from the main gate. Olive Thrushes have recently been split and are now confined to Southern Africa. I don’t know.

A small flock of Merops bullockoides were feeding in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Large clumps of droppings, yet to be broken down by bugs, bacteria, or a returning rhino, were used as slightly raised perches. Thus my BBOTY for 2019 was; White-fronted Bee-eater. They were chasing flies around a rhinoceros midden.

It seemed to me that this species has a much more liberal approach to raising offspring compared to that other waterfowl: the young chicks were sometimes exploring the wetland dozens of meters away from the mother – so far I think I’ve always seen ducklings to follow their parents quite closely.
