This visit to southern Spain, however, fell in the middle of raptor migration, so flamingos were not on my agenda. Nest-building must have been on their agenda, for they hopped this way and that with delicate moss bits hanging from their tiny beaks. It’s no surprise we confused Winter and Pacific Wrens; until 2010, they were considered the same species! The bird’s song was lovely, but we wanted to actually see the wren as well.

In Costa Rica, we did our part and were elated to finish with more than 640 species. Keel-billed Toucan , one of three toucan species seen during our day of birding. Overhead, we got our first species in the form of a calling Black-bellied Whistling-Duck. The weather kept cooperating but it was another story for the birds.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.
