Rarer than Tigers: the Indian Wild Dog

10,000 Birds

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). To Nitin, this was a recce trip for his new wildlife photography tours enterprise.

Where have they gone?

10,000 Birds

Counting the Birds I was in my teens when I undertook my first bird-survey: it was field work for the British Trust for Ornithology’s The Atlas of Breeding Birds in Britain and Ireland. The breeding and wintering birds of Britain and Ireland. Published in 1976, The Atlas was, I believe, the very first work of its kind.

Seabird City Spectacular

10,000 Birds

Alas, East Anglia, where I live, isn’t an area renowned for its sea cliffs, so to visit a major seabird colony I have to drive either west (the coast of West Wales has some superb colonies) or north. These birds are all cliff nesters. Incidentally, there have been no recorded cases of bird flu at Bempton this year.

They’re not, alas particularly impressive. These birds (usually juveniles) are clearly linked to the growing breeding population in the region. Pallid Swifts were already back at their breeding sites, while the marshes provided a host of waders, including year-ticks such as Whimbrel, Curlew Sandpiper and Kentish Plover.

Best Bird of the Year 2013

10,000 Birds

My fiance and I drove nearly two hours to the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in rural Indiana to watch them come in for the evening. Alas, the bird had flown. Alas, this year was the first since Mike started birding that he didn’t see a single lifer. What’s a birder to do? Tragic, right?
