The cows and their entourage of Cattle Egrets sloshed through the pastures, each time they moved we lurched forward hoping to see a disturbed Grey-breasted Crake hop into view – but alas, no such luck even though we were hearing the little skulkers consistently. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also.

We also observed nests of Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian Pelicans , Little Egrets , Cattle Egret (with a chick), Squacco Heron , and Spoonbills. Yet, that was the only time we used insect repellent on the entire trip.

Back to the Zrenjanin Road and continue another 15 km / 9 mi, and by the end of the Centa village turn into an inconspicuous dirt road leading to the Veliki Alas fish farm (north of the village). We followed that road for several kilometres to find half a dozen Black Kites quartering the fields.

Alas, there is no eagle to be seen either. Susliks are becoming rarer: they need cattle to graze and keep the grass short. But on modern farms, cattle are being kept indoors and if the pasture becomes overgrown, ground squirrels disappear. No Susliks are to be seen – they are waiting for the sun. Not an eagle in sight.

Cattle fields surrounded the small town, the cows forming dark silhouettes against the rapidly graying skies. Alas, they turned out to be Ring-billed Gulls , but as I turned back to the car another flock of white caught my eye. I blinked a few times, at first not believing my own vision.

Halfway between SouthWild Pantanal and the northern terminus of the Transpantaneira, Pousada Alegre offers slightly more affordable lodging set within a working cattle ranch. Alas, it was over too soon. Screamers are most closely related to waterfowl such as ducks and geese.

Alas, it seems they were already gone from Tianmashan in March. At least that is how it is among Common Rosefinches : older males sing with a longer strophe length than yearlings. Of course, this factoid should be presented with a photo of a male, not a female rosefinch.
