Just a Few More Days…

10,000 Birds

Even the first Common House Martin has been spotted and the flocks of returning Common (Eurasian) Cranes here and there – alas, not by me. However, Garganeys and Northern Lapwings are back; the other day I saw my first Black Stork of the season and Eurasian Skylarks are already singing in flight above the fields.

Definitely NOT beep-beep

10,000 Birds

But their broad collection of rather odd sounds (moans, groans, hoots, screeches, and bill rattles) also do not include anything remotely like a “ beep beep “ Popular media getting bird calls wrong. Alas, we did not hear our Roadrunners vocalize, although I have heard sing on one other visit to La Escalera.

10,000 Birds

All were started from collected seeds. Alas, I have found no viable acorns anywhere this past year — just as I am figuring out how to get oak seedlings to survive. 10,000 Birds

We stayed at the Yellow Bay Biological Research Station, a cozy collection of buildings located, logically enough, on a slope overlooking a bay lined with yellow sandstone on the eastern shore of the lake. Rarer than Tigers: the Indian Wild Dog

10,000 Birds

Nitin hopes to enlarge his collection of photos of Tigers. Among teak and bamboo thickets, a winding forest road takes us deeper into the enchanted Snake Jungle, but alas, not a Tiger in sight. “Deep in the forest, there is a temple of ‘Nag’ or Snake, hence the name of the reserve – Nagzira.”

Horrible Hybrids

10,000 Birds

I’ve seen some weird-looking hybrids in duck collections. Many years ago a friend of mine kept a small but varied collection of ducks and geese. Alas, I wasn’t able to spend sufficient time watching them to see if they had any success with the assembled Blackgrouse hens. These two Racklehahns were quite different.
