Even the first Common House Martin has been spotted and the flocks of returning Common (Eurasian) Cranes here and there – alas, not by me. However, Garganeys and Northern Lapwings are back; the other day I saw my first Black Stork of the season and Eurasian Skylarks are already singing in flight above the fields.
But their broad collection of rather odd sounds (moans, groans, hoots, screeches, and bill rattles) also do not include anything remotely like a “ beep beep “ Popular media getting bird calls wrong. Alas, we did not hear our Roadrunners vocalize, although I have heard sing on one other visit to La Escalera.
All were started from collected seeds. Alas, I have found no viable acorns anywhere this past year — just as I am figuring out how to get oak seedlings to survive. But last year I was able to double my oak population, with three new gathered-acorn seedlings, so perhaps these fungi are taking hold on our lot. But I want more!
We stayed at the Yellow Bay Biological Research Station, a cozy collection of buildings located, logically enough, on a slope overlooking a bay lined with yellow sandstone on the eastern shore of the lake. Alas, my hoped-for Tundra Swan did not materialize despite the proximity of Swan River National Wildlife Refuge.
And when you do get it to come within sight (alas, with playback, always), it can be as bold as any other member of this cocky family. I went to collect cuttings of local red sages that bloom beautifully in my garden, but need renewing every couple of years. But there is no missing its beautiful song wringing through a canyon.
Nitin hopes to enlarge his collection of photos of Tigers. Among teak and bamboo thickets, a winding forest road takes us deeper into the enchanted Snake Jungle, but alas, not a Tiger in sight. “Deep in the forest, there is a temple of ‘Nag’ or Snake, hence the name of the reserve – Nagzira.”
I’ve seen some weird-looking hybrids in duck collections. Many years ago a friend of mine kept a small but varied collection of ducks and geese. Alas, I wasn’t able to spend sufficient time watching them to see if they had any success with the assembled Blackgrouse hens. These two Racklehahns were quite different.
The first Monday out after the festival, I took six people to Las Mesas, because it is almost within the city of Morelia, but offers a wide collection of habitats and species. Alas, these highly unpredictable birds seem to have moved on. We saw 72 species, although in winter we could have found 30 more.
But alas, my garden Wilsons have not been seen here on the 4th of April. Fortunately, my own garden is currently being visited by a nice collection of resident species. But my “Wilsons” really were Wilsons: Wilson’s Warblers , to be exact. One or or two of these cute birds visited me every day throughout the winter.
Maybe I’m weird, but there is nothing I like better in a visitor center (aside from clean and comfortable restrooms) than a good taxidermy collection, and Lee Metcalf features a strong entry in this category. At last we plunged into the woods, hoping for Great Horned Owls.
Collecting nectar is not a random occurrence. But alas for Aderman no such need exists today. A high metabolism and the ability to rotate their wings through 180 degrees enables these little gems to fly forward, backward and pretty much everything in between.
The Winter Gull Survey (WinGS) will run over the winters of 2023/24 and 2024/25 to collect updated information on the numbers and distributions of these wintering gulls in the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Alas, there wasn’t this year, but this wasn’t due to a sudden collapse in bird numbers, but the weather.
Alas, East Anglia, where I live, isn’t an area renowned for its sea cliffs, so to visit a major seabird colony I have to drive either west (the coast of West Wales has some superb colonies) or north. These birds are all cliff nesters.
It was with a mix and horror and skepticism that I first read about the unholy marriage of Peeps and beer recently perpetrated by Fort Worth brewers The Collective Brewing Project and their partners in this crime at Lone Star Taps & Caps. Certainly – before this review, at least – I had never actually bought a box.
Alas, one would be wrong – I immediately mixed it up with the rather similar-looking Rufous-bellied Niltava (not shown here). The Indochinese Green Magpie is one of four species of green magpie (it used to be only three, but one of the subspecies collected enough frequent flier miles to get an upgrade to full species).
The star of such huge concentrations is the massive Jabiru , towering over a diverse collection of South American waterbirds such as Sunbittern , Plumbeous Ibis , and Southern Screamer. Alas, it was over too soon.
Alas, only 12 plants remain from that season, victims of my inexperienced care. This oak was my first success with collected acorns. Alas, this is what I must trim. I have successfully started, from wild-collected seeds and cuttings, food sources for birds such as Coral Trees, Cassias, Chokecherries, and lots of Oaks.
Ever since I was a kid I wanted to learn how to draw, but alas I never made it past the stickman. Published in 1966, it is a collection of brief profiles and magnificent portraits of 56 of the region’s most characteristic birds. More precisely I wanted to learn how to draw wildlife. I guess it’s a gift you either have or you don’t.
Anyway, so I started checking my bird photo collection for photos of species starting with an A (after all, this is a bird photo blog, though I sometimes tend to forget this). It probably still is crap (though I have to admit I am a bit curious to watch one episode again, just to be sure, you know …).
The campus has a pond (above), partially covered by hyacinths full of Northern Jacanas , where I tried to spot at least one caiman (alas, without success), a botanical garden and manicured grounds (with quite a few Green Ibises ) together with a souvenir shop. Since I wanted to buy some genuine tastes of Costa Rica, we continued to C.A.T.I.E.
Traditionally, the slow season, but the beats have mopped their collective brow and outdone their previous efforts.
