Alas, East Anglia, where I live, isn’t an area renowned for its sea cliffs, so to visit a major seabird colony I have to drive either west (the coast of West Wales has some superb colonies) or north. There were typically four teams of Climmers at Bempton, with each team taking 300-400 eggs a day. These birds are all cliff nesters.

Ever since I was a kid I wanted to learn how to draw, but alas I never made it past the stickman. More precisely I wanted to learn how to draw wildlife. It depicted a Common Loon ( Gavia immer ) sitting on eggs on a seemingly crude nest. I guess it’s a gift you either have or you don’t. He died on July 27, 2008.
