Alas, the long slog to spring will take many, many more frigid, blustery weeks. On the other hand, the devils that drive Corey to relentlessly hunt rarities keep him warm even in freezing temps. If you live on my side of the globe–north/south axis, of course–you may be as sick as I am of winter weather.
Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us. It is too early to show.
Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also.
Alas, there must have been some lesson taking place that was beyond my understanding. The sounds of the night intensified, and we were lucky to catch a Band-tailed Nighthawk hunting overhead as we were unmooring ourselves. After a momentary stillness day became night, and life erupted again.
Like several of my favorite NWRs, this one was established as a haven for migratory birds, most notably waterfowl, during the bad old days when uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had put the future of even species we now think of as common in doubt. As a result, early migration season is an excellent time to visit.
Actually, I am not waiting for them, but for the Eastern Imperial Eagle to come here to hunt Susliks – an eagle from one of the last two remaining nests in Serbia. Alas, there is no eagle to be seen either. On some earlier occasion I observed an Imperial Eagle hunting. No Susliks are to be seen – they are waiting for the sun.
There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility. From late April, carry an insect repellent with you. Bus: 95, 96 & 104. eBird list.
In the English translation, the story is titled “Little Fable”: “Alas,” said the mouse, “the whole world is growing smaller every day. This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). And it does not even live in reeds.
Squacco Heron – the same as previous, from the left Danube bank levees, also the Veliko Blato Lake (Mika Alas fish farm in the suburb of Krnjaca, #3). Little Bittern is a reed-bed skulker and much harder to observe. The best spot is the Reva Pond #6.
They’re not, alas particularly impressive. It’s a total I’ve never approached since, which might explain why in recent years I stopped counting. However, 12 months ago I decided to do a 2023 year list, so now, with 2024 just hours away, I can reveal the results. My British total was a mere 172 species – not bad, but not very good.
Alas, he was gone before I had a chance to lift my camera. Many friends and guests enjoyed seeing this particular bird soar, hunt, or even sit for hours in the valley. I photographed it several times, one of these photographs is the title image when wrote about how I had fallen in love with the valley itself.
Alas, mine were sub-standard. Like all members of the Nightjar family, the Buff-collared Nightjar hunts for insects on the wing, at night, and rests immobile during the day, protected by its subtle camouflage. This photo is Nacho’s. A group of five spectacular White-throated Magpie-Jays made a raucous appearance.
Alas, the bird had flown. The bulk of my lifers were on a trip to India in October/November but all the birds were surpassed by watching and photographing a Snow Leopard hunting and killing a Blue Sheep , so none of them are real contenders for BBOTY. It was my last day in Texas, still many birds and butterflies to see. Tragic, right?
The open, dry habitat was perfect for it and the experience was so real, it was almost painful to wake up but alas, no Loggerhead Shrike, just a vivid dream of a migrant bird that could make a mega appearance in Costa Rica. Luckily, the one that was twitched by many birders last weekend (moi included!)
On the shore were the dominant big birds you see in Australia, a very vocal Australian Raven , some Australian Magpies , a hunting Grey Butcherbird , pairs of Maned Ducks cropping the grass and a pair of Laughing Kookaburras watchfully surveying the cafe patrons. Alas this was not to be, and this species remains one of my nemesis birds.
