I raise this perennial issue because I found myself twitching a rare ABA bird this weekend. Alas, they both kept their heads down until long after we’d left. Some of us love to chase down preposterous vagrants, while others eschew bird chasing for contemplation of standard local fare and seasonal specialties.
Two weekends ago, I took a little jaunt to Eagle Lake hoping to see the complete courtship display of the Western and Clark’s Grebes but alas, I was too late. They begin feeding by dipping that huge bill into the water and scooping prey into their pouch, water flowing out of the pouch as they raise it back up to horizontal.
The count aims to raise awareness of the important role that farmers play in the conservation of farmland birds, and to measure the impact of the conservation work that many farmers and shoots carry out.” Alas, there wasn’t this year, but this wasn’t due to a sudden collapse in bird numbers, but the weather.
Alas, one would be wrong – I immediately mixed it up with the rather similar-looking Rufous-bellied Niltava (not shown here). In providing this information, they quote extensively from an ornithology book that was published 3 years before I was born (and I am not a young man).
Is Belgrade the New Berlin is a question recently raised in Vogue by Marry Holland. The lake is a private property, run by the Mika Alas fish farm company and visitors must ask for permission in advance ( management contacts ). Her article starts with a bold claim that “no city makes you feel more like a New Yorker than Belgrade.”
Seriously, Panama raises the art of under-communication to new, deplorable heights. Old Gamboa Road, a new destination for me, was the biggest revelation; I found some of the specialties of this site, though alas not all. Let’s be honest: driving around Panama sucks. Nonetheless, my family trip to Panama qualifies as a birding success.
For people who aren’t as involved with their bird watching like I am, huummingbirds seem so cute, it’s easy to imagine them raising cute tiny families in little cabins complete with tiny straws and cups, tiny hats and tiny, little table and chairs and the family all humming along in perfect harmony.
And it raises a question: if all the birds are having a party over there, am I in the wrong spot? Many of them are heavenly islands, alas, with 100 or less bird species. And where all those birds are? This map shows the distribution of the World’s bird species, based on overlying the breeding and wintering ranges of all known species.
Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. Raising and lowering its head, like stretching. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. It rotates its head 180 degrees to keep an eye on us. Humbly, we approach on foot. The other two are motionless.
At least they seem to understand that raising chicks is hard and annoying work and have found at least a partial solution for this problem: “co-operative breeder, up to four individuals attending chicks at one nest, at least three seen to feed chicks” (HBW).
The campus has a pond (above), partially covered by hyacinths full of Northern Jacanas , where I tried to spot at least one caiman (alas, without success), a botanical garden and manicured grounds (with quite a few Green Ibises ) together with a souvenir shop. Since I wanted to buy some genuine tastes of Costa Rica, we continued to C.A.T.I.E.
Alas, it seems they were already gone from Tianmashan in March. That paper raises an interesting question: “When less attractive people accept less attractive dates, do they persuade themselves that the people they choose to date are more physically attractive than others perceive them to be?
