Many of them are heavenly islands, alas, with 100 or less bird species. I am thinking of a relatively stable/prosperous bird-paradise where one may be able to find a job in ecotourism or wildlife research… or, to begin with, as a resident environmental scientist / nature blogger in some wildlife lodge? Scratched from the list.

Roadside Birding and Flathead Lake

We stayed at the Yellow Bay Biological Research Station, a cozy collection of buildings located, logically enough, on a slope overlooking a bay lined with yellow sandstone on the eastern shore of the lake. Alas, my hoped-for Tundra Swan did not materialize despite the proximity of Swan River National Wildlife Refuge.

Birding Nonggang, Guangxi, China – part 2

The breeding ecology of the Yellow-bellied Warbler was actually studied exactly here at Nonggang in 2019 by 3 Chinese researchers. Some Thai researchers looked at the breeding ecology of the Buff-breasted Babbler and published their findings in the somewhat unsuitable-sounding journal “Agriculture and Natural Resources”.

Horrible Hybrids

Further research revealed the Bird Hybrids blog ( [link] ) has several revealing photographs of this (and many other) hybrids. Alas, I wasn’t able to spend sufficient time watching them to see if they had any success with the assembled Blackgrouse hens. Svensson notes that Tufted drake x Pochard duck is “now a well-known hybrid”.

In this case, clearly eagles aren’t always hidden, warblers aren’t always yellow, buntings aren’t always close-up (alas), and plovers aren’t always piping. But just as snipe are always cryptic, Gyrfalcons are always cool, even when they’re not ice cold like the ones in Nunavut!

In my case, I had to format my excel sheet just so, a considerable task because when I dabbled in Birdstack (gone, alas, but not forgotten) I adopted its formatting as well as the more fluid International Ornithological Congress (IOC) taxonomy , both of which were inimical to that of eBird. Importing locations is even more ridiculous.
