With a hardiness that belies their delicate looks (but helps explain their phenomenal success), these pioneering pigeons are already sitting on eggs at at least one location in Montana. Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity. Glad that’s not the case.

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia.

I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. My current criteria for a dedicated birding trip are having a good probability of seeing several new birds or seeing a birding spectacle ( e.g. , Red Knots and other shorebirds feasting on horseshoe crab eggs in Delaware Bay). Nome, Alaska.
