Rats had previously preyed on eggs and young of practically every defenseless seabird on the island, and had taken to even attacking adult albatross as they sat on their nests. Albatross chicks will no longer have to endure slowly getting eaten alive, unlike this poor bird.

Let’s explore some of these far-off places and the birds that find shelter here. These predatory thrushes have been known to prey on albatross and Spectacled Petrel eggs, the young of Great Shearwaters and have even been known to remove storm-petrel species from their burrows and kill them.

The sheltered bays of the Coromandel are home to another endemic, the Southern Merganser. Hopefully you haven’t drunk too much the night before as there will be plenty of bird watching from the ferry, picking up albatrosses and shearwaters like Scarlett’s Shearwater. It certainly has no known relatives.
