The important thing is that I get to see albatrosses and he doesn’t. I mean, granted, he does live near the North Atlantic, the one ocean pretty much bereft of albatrosses (it wasn’t always that way, by the way). The Black-footed Albatross. I was lucky to work with the species on Tern Island in French Frigate Shoals.

I like to see birds for a long time and hear their vocalization; even if these are common species. In comparison, what I call a true pelagic trip was one that had as ultimate prize storm petrels, shearwaters, jaegers, skuas, tropicbirds, albatrosses, and other unexpected surprises seldom seem near the coast. White-chinned Petrel.

We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. And then there were the Flamingos.

I observe Piping Plovers every summer and they are amongst my favorite species overall, both because of their cuteness quotient and their ability to survive (with a little help from Plover monitors like my friend Laura, who convince beach goers that having dunes fenced off is not destroying their summer). 7) Piping Plover.

Greater White-fronted Geese are one of many species that mate for life. Aside from geese, various albatross, alcids, eagles, owls, cranes, swans and condors have life partners as well. Lastly, I’ll leave you with Laysan Albatross. Other infamous brood parasites include cowbirds and Old World cuckoos.

There is much to enjoy and appreciate here and I only wish I could have tested out some of these species accounts in pelagic waters before writing about them (sadly, the 10,000 Birds pelagic to Antarctica was canceled this year).
