In particular the South Island destination of Kaikoura is world-renowned for the flocks of albatrosses and giant petrels floating right off the pelagic boat, and the ease of the trip makes it a must-visit for any visiting birder. The final large petrel species is another gadfly petrel, albeit a much larger one than the Cook’s Petrel.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Yes, the same Kaikoura I keep banging on about that is a great place to see albatrosses. The routine for swimming with Hector’s Dolphins is slightly different to other species, however.

Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. One of my more memorable New Year’s days was in the Falkland Islands, back in 1989.

These remote islands, some more than 1,000 miles from Honolulu, are home to huge globally-significant colonies of Laysan and Black-footed Albatross, among many others. Many of these islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and one of the most important areas is Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.

I opened the year in California and even though I flew out in the evening on New Year’s Day I did see some species out there that I would otherwise not have seen for the year. Winter birding around New York City was just so-so but I did add one species to my Queens list. I finally saw an albatross!

I am not immune to the siren call of posting images for likes… like this Salvin’s Albatross. It’s been the image for that species on Wikipedia for almost 8 years. Google-image the species. It’s been the main image for the species for over a decade, and seen by millions in the news.

My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Obviously my best bird of the year is going to come during this trip, what with several species of endemic pitta and broadbill possible, not to mention 8 species of hornbill and numerous babblers, storks, kingfishers, trogons and even the endemic Bornean Bristlehead.

What I don’t understand is why animal rights organizations almost completely ignore wildlife. Habitat destruction and degradation is far and away the number one reason why wildlife populations are extirpated or go extinct. What’s even more frustrating is when animal rights people learn of plans to cull nonnative species.

Like Kapiti the island is an offshore refuge for many species extinct on the mainland, with a lot of the work being done by the voluntary Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. One species I really hoped to find on the trip was the Kokako. Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity.

There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans. The Fluttering Shearwaters continued to be common around the coasts of both North and South Island, and just outside the harbour, in sight of the city, I saw a White-capped Albatross, my first albie of the year. White-capped Albatross ( ( Thalassarche steadi, taken a day later in Kaikoura). A pretty good find!

I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird. When Albatross alight in temporal alignment anything else is swamped out. I’m sure there were a lot of insects in range of my eyeballs, hiding behind leaves or camouflaged against bark as insects are wont to do.

I was lucky enough to get a four month window into the lives of one species, the Great Frigatebird , Fregata minor , while working for the USFWS on French Frigate Shoals in the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
