There are two things you need to know about A Field Guide to the Wildlife of South Georgia , edited by Robert Burton and John Croxall, and produced by the South Georgia Heritage Trust. The temptation will be to jump to the Wildlife sections. Nor is it about Georgia, the country in Eurasia. Who can resist penguins and whales?
Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). In the case of Midway, a National Wildlife Refuge , the offending species is Golden Crownbeard ( Verbesina enceliolides ) , an innocuous-looking flower that’s native to Mexico and the Southwestern United States. But plants? mainland.
I have raved on and on about how Kaikoura is the best place in the world to see albatrosses , but the once sleepy seaside town is not actually famous for these magnificent birds. As we shot out into the ocean we received a lecture on the Kaikoura Canyon, its wildlife and the Sperm Whale from Hayley, a local girl who was our guide.
Fish and Wildlife Service. This male Short-tailed Albatross has fledged 2 chicks from Eastern Island, Midway Atoll, the only place in the U.S. Short-tailed Albatross was thought to be, at one time, the most abundant species of albatross in the North Pacific. this species breeds. Somebody won a Nobel Prize.
–especially when reviewing books like A Field Guide to the Wildlife of South Georgia or Far from Land: The Mysterious Lives of Seabirds. I’ve been fortunate to see two Penguin species in the wild (African and Galapagos) and have dreamed of seeing more–maybe even all!–especially
In particular the South Island destination of Kaikoura is world-renowned for the flocks of albatrosses and giant petrels floating right off the pelagic boat, and the ease of the trip makes it a must-visit for any visiting birder. We soon were close to the Mokohinau Islands , one of the many islands in the area that serve as wildlife refuges.
Black-footed Albatross : The most common albatross off the west coast, virtually all of the world’s Black-footed Albatross also breed in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, on the same islands as the Laysan Albatross on Hawaiian Islands NWR and Midway Atoll NWR.
Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Yes, the same Kaikoura I keep banging on about that is a great place to see albatrosses. Which has always mystified me slightly. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air.
The sea is never far away wherever you are in the Falklands: my diary records “a constant passage of Black-browed Albatrosses, hundreds of birds as far as the horizon, their white undersides catching the sun [ the weather must have cheered up! ] as they sheered into the wind. Re-reading my diary all these years later, it sounds pretty good.
The Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Florida was a nice break from winter though the blizzard back home forced me to drive back to New York adding birds seen on the road and at rest stops along the way. Garganey , 11 June, Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, New York. I finally saw an albatross!
These remote islands, some more than 1,000 miles from Honolulu, are home to huge globally-significant colonies of Laysan and Black-footed Albatross, among many others. Many of these islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and one of the most important areas is Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.
To that end please enjoy this quick guide of where to go birding and wildlife watching when based at any of the many World Cup locations. Don’t forget you can also see some wildlife on the road as you go ! North of Dunedin is Orokonui , a wildlife Sanctuary modeled on Karori with a fence to keep introduced mammals out.
I am not immune to the siren call of posting images for likes… like this Salvin’s Albatross. Praise others so that they will come and heap praise on you. Post one like two… and so on and so forth. Just as social media has turned out to be a dumpster-fire for democracy, it’s been a rather mixed blessing for birding too.
But as I walked around my local wildlife refuge seeing all my local birds for the first time it occurred to me I’d fallen into a competitive listing trap. No excuse not to, especially as I could also see Stewart Island Shags and Northern Royal Albatrosses, so not going to the Otago Peninsula would be some kind of crime I think.
but I really feel I should nominate an albatross, if only because I love taunting Corey about them. I’ll go for the Black-browed Albatross , in celebration of the fact that conservation efforts have resulted in this species being downgraded from endangered to near threatened this year. He wrote about it in more detail here.
I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. Standing in the shadow of a historic lighthouse watching Great Frigatebird, Red and White-tailed tropicbird, Laysan Albatross, and Red-footed Bobby glide by at Kilauea Point NWR is remarkable.
Ka’ena Point is also a breeding ground for the Federally protected Laysan albatross, where 45 nests were being carefully monitored by the non-profit Pacific Rim Conservation. The oldest Laysan albatross was last seen raising a chick on Midway Atoll in 2016, at age 66. People do not work with wildlife for fame and fortune.

About half of all breeding Wandering Albatross nest on the Prince Edward Islands. Yellow-nosed Albatross.
Birders know that some of the finest birding locations in the country are on federal land , which include national parks , wildlife refuges , forests , monuments , and seashores , among others. The eleven largest national wildlife refuges are also in Alaska, including Arctic NWR and Yukon Delta NWR , each more than 19 million acres.
I have been to 11 countries to watch wildlife that this species lives in. Looking over my list, it seems I’m a fairly shallow wildlife watcher interested in spectacle. I think I know what Corey wants for Christmas… a Buller’s Albatross. Trips albatrosses bucket lists South Africa wish lists'
This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.
Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota. This is my flock of Laysan Albatross , on Midway Atoll. Great Frigatebirds are infamous for assaulting boobies ( Red-footed Boobies , that is) in the air, but when perched they seem to get along just fine.

White-capped Albatross ( ( Thalassarche steadi, taken a day later in Kaikoura). A pretty good find!
There is also an “Alphabetical index to bird groups” in the front of the book, indicating in text where you can find albatrosses, dotterels, fairy-wrens, shorebirds, whistlers, etc. The other two artists are Peter Marsack and Kim Franklin, both of whom also contributed to the HANZAB and other notable wildlife projects.
