Houston Audubon instituted a ‘no hunting’ policy and by July 1995, there were 50 heron nests on the island, protected from mammalian predators by the large alligators in the waterways. Claybottom Pond was part of a land parcel donated to Houston Audubon in 1994 and at that time no birds were nesting on the island in its center.

I then had a year in Florida – beware the alligators and hurricanes! As a birder, I’ve seen the sounds of guns scare off geese and ducks I was trying to observe in New Jersey waters, and shuddered over the skins of Northern Pintails and American Wigeons seen in boats along Alligator Alley, Florida. So–not a fan of hunting. And, neither are most of our 10,000 Birds writers. Barker and Carrol L.
By building nests out over the swamp, the birds benefit from the protection offered by the alligators in deterring predators such as raccoons and snakes. Boat-tailed Grackles count eggs and chicks as part of their diet and they were well represented here today.
