For example, years ago, Eiton Tchenrov postulated that the wild progenitor of the domestic dog, some subspecies or another of wolf, could benefit from overlapping its breeding territory with human hunters. The humans tended to keep away a range of predators that might take the pups as a form of interference competition.
As with many Florida birds, they don’t seem to fear humans as much as other places. I guess when you live with alligators, humans just don’t seem like that big of a deal. They are normally nocturnal (these photos were taken at sundown) but in Florida, they can be seen during the day.
No, this is not Florida, but we have American Alligators in the Carolinas as well. I can’t imagine alligators are capable of expressing anything but hunger through those vertical reptilian slits though. And aside from the birds, there are arguably the most imposing herps in North America, American Alligators. The signs along all the ponds in this development warn of alligators and snakes which are, interestingly, precisely the sort of thing I’m interested in coming across. No nerves around humans for this guy.
Many may not make it to their breeding grounds due to the extreme stress of the situation, lack of resources, the weather itself, disorientation, and human-caused killers like windows and cars. So, maintaining habitat along the coastline is vital to supporting these species.
Giant anteaters, giant otters, giant armadillos, giant river turtles, giant termites and giant waterlilies that can sustain the weight of a human baby! Giant waterlilies at Karanambu Ranch.
In some areas wooden docks and boardwalks provided the only evidence of nearby human habitation; in others, multi-colored, bay-front homes enjoyed short walks to the water. Brown water limits visibility, but I know that a ton of fish species call this river home, not to mention the alligators.
They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. Houston Audubon instituted a ‘no hunting’ policy and by July 1995, there were 50 heron nests on the island, protected from mammalian predators by the large alligators in the waterways. Surprisingly, the Avocet area was not fenced off.
Are the kids cooking monkey, cat, dog, alligator or turtle? If you're going to call something an anthropological adventure, it would make sense to teach the kids about the other animals humans eat and give the kids the opportunity to prepare and eat dog, cat and monkey, no? But I bet anything doesn't go.
Dogs are able to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes and warn humans of impending heart attacks and strokes. In many ways, human emotions are the gifts of our animal ancestors. Dogs can differentiate dilutions of 1 part per billion, follow faint odor trails, and are 10,000 times more sensitive than humans to certain odors.
I am, of course, referring to Alligator mississippiensis , more commonly known as the American Alligator , or, colloquially, as gators. Though alligator attacks are rare they do happen. According to Wikipedia : Alligators are capable of killing humans, but are generally wary enough not to see them as a potential prey.
Alligator on nest. Another supporter said the place would let “families…connect with each other as human beings” ( SunSentinel ). Adding 80,000 individual external automobile trips per day to existing traffic in the region, increasing CO? Again, really?
