This particular species is not native to New Zealand (similar to its status in North America). A European Starling in New Zealand made the news this week. The woman in the video found it as a chick at a few days old and hand reared it. The bird is now bonded to humans and an ambassador to her class and the bird has quite the vocabular y.

In North America, at least in the eastern part of it, we celebrate the return of the Baltimore Oriole to parks and farms this time of year. Troupials raise their own chicks, generally 3 to 4 per clutch, they just steal the nest in which they raise them.

The very excited response was that she had been banded as a fledgling in 1983, which made her, at 27 years and 9 months of age, the second oldest living wild Red-tailed hawk ever recovered in all of North America. Ferret 492 — a black-footed ferret, Mustela nigripes — raises her head from a black-tailed prairie dog’s burrow, sniffs the April night. With its red, white, and blue plumage, it is also clearly the most “patriotic” bird in America. Both species are notoriously aggressive, and out-competed bluebirds for the nesting cavities they needed to raise their young. It’s true, there was some push-back when naming the bluebird.
