To the Editor: Re “ Animal Abuse as Clue to Additional Cruelties ” (news article, March 18): As someone who deals with dozens of cruelty-to-animals cases every week, I applaud states that are imposing stricter penalties on people who hurt animals and that are working to establish online registries of animal abusers.

It is not just a few outspoken animal rights fanatics who hold this view. Animal abuse is a crime in all fifty states, and rightly so. Similarly, most people also agree that: (2) It is wrong to kill a conscious sentient animal for no good reason. What’s good for us is good for the animals.

They enacted it to make animal abusers and the corporations that profit from that animal abuse richer. That is why 75% of the co-sponsors of the House Bill and 90% of the co-sponsors of the Senate Bill were Republicans. Make no mistake about it. These Congresspersons didn’t enact this legislation to make you safer.
