Cruelty to animals on such a scale should be the centerpiece of any discussion on raising animals for food. The problem is that there is no possible answer to why we allow such cruelty, other than that we are barbarians. Is that why we conveniently omit it from all discussion?
Stop supporting unnecessary animalcruelty in all of its forms. Stop supporting unnecessary animalcruelty in all of its forms. What can I do to stop supporting unnecessary animalcruelty, and is it difficult to do so? b) Stop eating animal products. (c)

This is the question whether the wrongness of cruelty to animals depends in part upon the animals' suffering, or whether it does not depend upon that at all, but only upon the bad effects upon human beings of cruelty to animals, and upon the badness of the human states of mind that such cruelty involves.
To the Editor: Re “ AnimalCruelty and Free Speech ” (editorial, Oct. The law speaks specifically and narrowly to the distribution for profit of videos that show illegal acts of cruelty actually being performed on live animals (my italics). Oprah is discovering just how delicious a heart-healthful, cruelty-free, environmentally-friendly vegan diet can be. Try a cruelty-free vegan diet for 21 days and see how you feel. And by this they mean not only that it is wrong to enjoy torturing animals—which few moralists would ever have wished explicitly to deny, however little emphasis they might have placed on cruelty to animals in their moral teaching—but that it is wrong to cause them to suffer unnecessarily. Controversies no doubt remain.
Its monstrous doctrine of eternal punishment and the torture of the damned underlies much of the barbarity with which man has treated man; and the deep division imagined by the Church between the human being, with his immortal soul, and the soulless "beasts," has been responsible for an incalculable sum of cruelty.
As you know, the Animal Legal Defense Fund is committed to protecting the lives of animals everywhere. But you may not know that we have filed a lawsuit against Mendes Calf Ranch for its violation of California animalcruelty laws. Information about the campaign can be found here.
Isenhour is charged with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird. As a society, we should not tolerate such wanton acts of cruelty. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines. Weigh in: Should Isenhour receive the maximum penalty allowable by law? I hope I'm wrong.
Moral philosophers, even those belonging to the Critical School [the followers of Kant and Fries], have often represented duties to animals as indirect duties to oneself or to other men. For instance, maltreatment of animals is forbidden on the ground that it encourages cruelty, that is, a disposition that obstructs fulfillment of duty.
Bullfighting is simply prolonged animal torture. Most children start life with a love and reverence of animals. Cruelty and disregard for them are taught. To the Editor: Re “ Child Matadors Draw Olés in Mexico’s Bullrings ” (front page, Nov. 19): It is so sad to see children being taught to torture and kill calves.

To compensate for their lack of skill, hunters set their dogs upon a wild pig—a descendant of boars brought to America solely to give hunters the pleasure of killing a helpless animal. Many hunters compound their cruelty by abandoning their dogs when they are no longer of use.
There is no difference between cruelty to a pig or a dog or a hen or a cat, and so the sooner we relegate these awful devices to the dustbin of history, the better. 1, 2015 The writer is director of advocacy and policy for Farm Sanctuary, a national farm animal protection group.' Factory farmers are worried about their future livelihoods, and they should be.
To the Editor: Re “ Egg Producers and Humane Society Urging Federal Standard on Hen Cages ” (Business Day, July 8): I’m a vegetarian who turned vegan after coming to terms with the fact that just because I was eating hormone-free, antibiotic-free, even free-range organic eggs didn’t mean that egg-producing hens were living a cruelty-free life.
I do not share the extreme vegetarian view that food reform is the foundation of other reforms, for I think it can be shown that all cruelties to animals, whether inflicted in the interests of the dinner-table, the laboratory, the hunting-field, or any other institution, are the outcome of one and the same error—the blindness which can see no unity (..)
The question is whether becoming a vegetarian in order to protest animal suffering or as a way of committing oneself to feeding the hungry people of the world is good but not obligatory. Suppose first that there is a moral obligation to protest cruelty to animals or to commit onself [ sic ] to feeding the hungry people of the world.
The horse slaughter industry in the United States has nothing to do with feeding hungry people and everything to do with animalcruelty. To the Editor: As sponsors of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act , we take issue with Christa Weil’s views on the horsemeat industry ( Op-Ed , March 5).
Compassionate consumers can take a stand against this cruelty by choosing vegan options. It is no more acceptable to confine 60 hens for their entire lives in a cage that you report is “about the size of a Ford F-150 pickup truck’s flatbed” than it would be to treat 60 cats similarly.
Their interests are primarily protected, if at all, through archaic state anti-cruelty statutes that were not passed in contemplation of the factory-farm or genetic engineering. Their ethological needs and direct interests are neglected to the extent that their needs are not as congruent with higher productivity and profit.
I am not saying that it is not a good thing that quite apart from food-reform, anti-vivisectionists should be denouncing the doings of the Scientific Inquisition, while humanitarians of another school are exposing the horrors of sport, for Cruelty is a many-headed monster, and there must at times be a concentration of energy on a particular spot; but (..)
The basic theriophobic stance is one of disgust at "brutish", "bestial", or "animalistic" traits that are suspiciously more frequently predicted of men than of beasts, just as the types of behavior in which these traits are exhibited (egoism, insatiable greed, insatiable sexuality, cruelty, the gratuitous slaughter of other species, and the mass extermination (..)

It is certain, then, that the practice of flesh-eating involves a vast amount of cruelty, a fact which cannot be lessened or evaded by any quibbling subterfuges. But, before we pass on to another phase of the food-question, we must deal more fully with that very common method of argument (alluded to in Chapter III.)
One suspects that the SPCA and the American Humane Society have done more to stop cruelty to animals than vegetarians ever could. That these organizations have not gone far enough and that wide areas of animalcruelty still exist does not show that their methods are wrong. Such a supposition seems ludicrous to me.
As for charity fundraisers, they don't have to support animalcruelty on a massive scale to be effective. that don't involve the callous disregard of animal interests. These latter fundraisers are the types of events that ethically-minded individuals should be celebrating and encouraging both in print and in practice.
Code, Title 18.48, made it a federal crime to knowingly create, sell, or possess a depiction of animalcruelty with the intention of placing that depiction in interstate or foreign commerce for commercial gain. I don’t think so.
