A column entitled "Ag Industry Threatened by AnimalRights" appeared in today's High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal [ HPMAJ ]. The column, which you can read here , is a call to arms to factory farmers to fight back against those individuals and organizations working to protect farm animals from the abuses inherent in factory farms.
In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animalrights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. And people that work in either conservation or animal welfare tend to like animals.
In the past I have attributed some of this conflict to differences between the conservation mindset and that of animalrights/animal welfare. The tigers keep wandering out of their reserve and taking cattle from nearby villages, taking what little these already poor people have.
Animalrights activists are behind the burning of cattle trucks at Harris Farms in western Fresno County early Sunday, according to a statement released by a clearinghouse for activists. Full story here at the Fresno Bee.
Families are just as capable of horrendous policies toward animals as anyone else. Their goal is to make a profit from the breeding and slaughter of animals. Just ask former cattle rancher Howard Lyman , who is now a vegan and animalrights activist.
The Argument from Human Grain Shortage All of the clearly moral arguments for vegetarianism given so far have been in terms of animalrights and suffering. It is argued that beef cattle and hogs are protein factories in reserve. New moral vegetarianism, however, rests on moral arguments couched in terms of human welfare.
Second, even if it did have an economic impact, it is unclear whether this would cause a reduction in animal suffering. Cattle might be overproduced because of government subsidies and new markets found for meat. But so could lots of other things: wearing an animalrights button, picketing meat-packing houses, and so on.
If beef cattle who could not feel pain were developed, then it would be permissible to eat them. KBJ: Martin seems to think that people who abstain from meat on the ground that meat-eating causes pain would not eat “beef cattle” even if they could not feel pain. What should our moral attitude be toward eating members of these species?
