Hunters go to Africa to shoot lions, and this is without question a good thing; for birds, for ecosystems, and for lions in general! The interests of those working for conservation and those working for animalrights and animal welfare don’t always perfectly align like you might think they do.
In " 'AnimalRights:' Pernicious Nonsense for Both Law & Public Policy ," Massachusetts attorney and "sportsman" Richard Latimer is on the mark with some concepts, and way off with others. Now, I know you're saying: That's not what animalrights is. For an attorney, that's awfully weak.
A judge has found five animal-rights activists not guilty of getting too close to seal hunters during the 2006 hunt off Canada's east coast. The five were charged with coming within 10 metres of seal hunters on March 26, 2006 while filming the annual slaughter in the Gulf of St. That's good news.
Seems that the guy that wrote Sarah Palin's convention speech was none other then noted conservative and alleged animalrights supporter Matthew Scully. Palin is known as an avid hunter; Scully is best known for his vigorous defense of animalrights.
Defense spokeswoman Josee Hunter told the newspaper "the uniforms worn by the Canadian Forces are a reflection of Canada's proud heritage," although animalrights activists had a different take on heritage.
Animalrights advocates say it's cruel to the nearly defenseless bears and harms them psychologically. Hunters say the exercise popular in the state's hilly northwestern corner helps them train their dogs on what to do when they come across a bear during a hunt.
Unfortunately for the hunters these were already all extinct, and with the introduction of cats, rats, stoats and the like the only upland game bird, the New Zealand Quail , was fast on the way out too. Genetic studies have suggested that some birds are hard to place as having hybrid ancestors.
I was browsing for some quotes when I came across this group - The National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA). They had a page with quotes from animalrights activists, but as I was reading, I noticed that they were very unfavorable quotes from such activists as Wayne Pacelle and Ingrid Newkirk.
In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animalrights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. And people that work in either conservation or animal welfare tend to like animals.
Defenders of the gun club accused me of lying, of distorting facts, of being anti-hunting, of being an animalrights activist, of being allied with the dreaded Friends of Animals, of hiding my true agenda (gun control), and of being unconcerned that animal lovers were supposedly threatening members of the gun club with death.
I get that you’re really angry, I mean, he was a popular lion and yes, his cute widdle cubs will probably die to, but I can’t help feeling you’ve kind of missed the point a bit, and well, ending all hunting in Africa will not solve much and maybe make things worse and… No, no, I’m not a hunter. To a point.
So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.
Now that the species is listed in the US as "threatened," hunters can't import the dead body parts (aka hunting "trophies") in from Canada. Supposedly, environmentalists and animalrights activists have "unfairly made the polar bear into 'the panda bear of North America.'" insert crying baby picture here.)
Like Vick, most of us shamelessly abuse and kill animals. Hunters shoot down animals in cold blood for mere sport. So why is one type of animal cruelty (dogfighting) more reprehensible than another (lobster-boiling)? Tags: animal cruelty Michael Vick animalrights.
The next argument is usually something along the lines of: But animals in the wild might starve to death, and get injured, maimed or killed by predators! And before any hunter can blurt out "Have you ever seen a deer die of starvation in the woods? Yes, that's true. It's not pretty. They are looking for healthy, large ones.
KBJ: Nobody in the animal-rights or animal-liberation movement views intelligence as a morally significant property, at least intrinsically. Animals in the wild try to escape from hunters.) Second, there are other species besides human beings that have high intelligence, e.g., chimpanzees and dolphins.
