Other than being a vegan, the most important actions you can take to help animals who are used for food are: Give generously to organizations that help those sentient nonhumans directly, such as Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary , Maple Farm Sanctuary , Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary and Eastern Shore Sanctuary.

I was thinking about the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary calendar of rescued animals photographed by Deb Durant that's on my refrigerator. It's on the refrigerator, but when you open the refrigerator door you'll see nothing that came from the animals in the calendar. People flock to photos and calendars on refrigerators.

My inbox this month has informed me that November is Vegan Awareness Month! Here's my attempt to bring it all together in an Animal Person post. I am a vegan who has adopted a diabetic greyhound who eats vegan food ( Natural Balance ), and who is adopting a boy from Russia. At least she eats vegan food, I tell myself.

First, Chris directed me to ePub Bud , which appears to be a timely and fantastic idea given my recent plea for more books for children about veganism. Working or volunteering at an animal sanctuary or shelter or participating (or starting) a Trap-Neuter-Release effort, maybe? My usual recommendation for general What do I do?

Families are just as capable of horrendous policies toward animals as anyone else. Their goal is to make a profit from the breeding and slaughter of animals. Just ask former cattle rancher Howard Lyman , who is now a vegan and animal rights activist. Yes, factory farms are the stuff of nightmares for nonhuman animals.
