As New Zealand’s beat writer I think I’ve done an okay job of discussing the birding of an entirely different island for most of the year, so it’s only fair that I keep that winning streak going by talking about my target for the trip. It’s a species that has bedeviled and bewitched me over the years.

Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. During this incredible DIY survival trip, patches of light tempt the small bird to a lethal, unnatural end.

There are so few places on Earth where one can see thousands and thousands and thousands of wading birds on a single visit, their white and blue and pink bodies contrasting with the golden swishing of marsh grasses or the deep green of cypress swamps. Purple Gallinules are what rainbows would look like if reincarnated into a bird.

I was going to continue talking about birding in Sydney today, but an incident on Friday needs to be addressed quickly, before the immediacy of the memory is gone. Sharks cruise off the city’s beaches, and just yesterday a deadly species of snake was found in a suburban railway station. Danger, danger, danger!

Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Sure, you might say that sharks eat people and dolphins don’t, but most sharks don’t eat people, and we can’t rule out the possibility that dolphins are simply better at doing it without getting caught. Now don’t get me wrong, I like dolphins.

These mangroves function as a sanctuary for fish and other animals that then make their way as adults across the channel to the coral reefs that surround the island. The boat-trip over to the island is far from uneventful and the pelagic birding is very rewarding. Swimming with a whale shark on the boat-trip to Isla Isabel.
