As we humans are animals, like birds are, it often seems to make more sense to me to assume that their and our drivers are similar, not different. Of course, we humans tend to give slightly elevated terms to our motives – but that does not generally mean that they are really different from those of other animals. Birds, maybe?

Think of African safaris and many people will naturally envisage herds of elephants and antelope, alongside some of the largest predators in the world. Add the chance of the African animals you’d expect, Elephant , Lion , Leopard and a host of antelope, who’s mouth would not water at the prospect? My name is Ashley Boon.

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This game reserve has 900 elephants – the second largest population in South Africa, after the Kruger National Park with 13,000. The others follow, some dozen animals in all. Barn Owl on a dry tree trunk and a… traffic jam!

Inside the camps, you are allowed to walk around freely – outside, this privilege is reserved for the animals. A Barn Owl slept peacefully on the inside of the roof of a well-visited tourist cafe. It warned me not to order the latte though – overpriced and not very good, according to the owl.

This perennial watercourse is a haven for wildlife especially during the dry season when thousands of elephant and other game congregate here. Raptors, both diurnal and nocturnal, abound in this park, from massive Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls roosting in leafy trees along the river to African Hawk-Eagles and Lizard Buzzards in the woodlands.
