Need help identifying a little guy

It had dark, charcoal-gray fur along it's back and a lighter, white-ish belly. It definitely wasn't a cottontail, gray squirrel, possum, muskrat, woodchuck or any of their babies. Initially I kept asking if it was a chinchilla that got loose. Again, sorry if this doesn't fit the sub but I am SO CURIOUS!
