Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay recently welcomed two more baby giraffes, bringing the herd to 17! The giraffes joined the rest of the heard on the Serengeti Plain on July 13th. What is neat about giraffes is that it is common for other members of the herd to become involved with the care of newborns. And they are super cute too!
Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay welcomed a new baby female reticulated giraffe on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. A giraffe’s gestation period is 15 months, and the mother and baby will be kept out of view for the first three months so they can be watched closely. At 5 foot, 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 127 pounds!
In Oregon you can’t own any “dangerous” wild animals, but you can get a special permit for a service monkey and anyone can fill their backyard with giraffes. In Mississippi you can own an ocelot, but not a wolverine. Are we fed up yet? Whether or not any of this should be legal is another subject.
At some point, I almost convinced myself that it would be a good idea to publish a coffee table photo book just showing Red-billed Oxpecker on various animals. And drying on a giraffe with your friends. Alone time. Taking a bath …. What a life. Kingfishers – the poor man`s Pittas? African Pygmy Kingfisher.
In some cases someone was blown away by the scenery and thought “this needs saving” In some cases someone thought “there seems to be a lot of animals here, let’s keep things that way” Still others happen because no one had done anything with the land yet and no one wanted the land anyway. Or Cheetahs.
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed a new baby reticulated giraffe just days ago. The addition brings Busch Gardens’ giraffe population to 15. The duo will join the other animals on the Serengeti Plain in a few months. A giraffe’s gestation period is approximately 15 months, and the new baby will nurse for about one year.
Bigger than the African Buffalo or the American Bison, it is the largest land animal after the Elephant, Rhino, the Hippopotamus and the Giraffe. Among the bamboo, only a few metres away from us, is an imposing black shadow of the largest wild bovid alive today: Gaur!
An expanse of habitat as vast as Murchison Falls NP in Uganda, as excessively generous in beauty and biodiversity, permits endless ways to experience both its birds and animals. I recommend both, but either should net you Rock Pratincole , a cool falls specialty. Rock Pratincoles.
Just stepping away from the birds for a minute, because you can’t really do any kind of story about Kruger National Park, and not at least mention the animals. The best I could do to mix both the birds and the animals was in the picture at the top of this story.
Elephants are nowhere more abundant and one can often find oneself in the midst of a peaceful, grazing family herd, a special experience indeed to be so close to such huge animals.

The area is a passage between the Amboseli, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills National Parks that is frequently used by lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals in the African savanna.
This is also why you very rarely find a photo of a giraffe on top of one of these posts – the other reason of course being that a giraffe photo would be relatively pointless in a birding blog. One of these photos would almost certainly have made the cover of this post if the design did not require a more horizontal format.
Animals of Kruger National Park by Keith Barnes is the animal guide I wish I had when I visited South Africa. It would have been useful to have more information about the rest camps that define each route, but I understand that there is a fine line (maybe even a broad one) between writing an animal guide and a tourist guide.
The animals listed below were all seen from the hide and went to make up a day total of 78 birds and 20 mammals, but only the one reptile on this winter’s day. Mammals seen; African Elephant, Brindled Wildebeeste, Giraffe, Hippopotamus, Warthog, Impala, Springbok. Birding Destinations Pilanesberg National Park South Africa'
Well, Copenhagen Zoo is back in the news; a few weeks after killing a giraffe and feeding it to some lions, it went and killed some of those same lions. To really get a story out there it needs to go viral, like the story about that giraffe did. And, I’m afraid to say, they aren’t.
These vast and rugged lands of savanna, hills, gorges and rivers still protect some of Ethiopia’s largest extant herds of typical African savanna game, including African Elephant, African Buffalo, Giraffe, Lion, Leopard, African Wild Dog and numerous species of grazers. Yellow-billed Stork.
Grief, friendship, gratitude, wonder, and other things we animals experience. Scientific research shows that many animals are very intelligent and have sensory and motor abilities that dwarf ours. In many ways, human emotions are the gifts of our animal ancestors. Waterfall Dances: Do animals have spiritual experiences?
The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” The Amur Leopard ( Panthera pardus orientalis – above) is just one majestic animal on the Critically Endangered (CR) list with less than 100 individuals in the wild due to hunting for its fur.
