To many people, the number of animal fatalities at the Calgary Zoo in newer years seemed very high. A huge spiral-horned goat got trapped in a toy rope and choked. It reported that human error surrounded more deaths than at any other zoo and forced immediate plans be taken to make sure of the animals’ safety.

Heading south on a good surfaced road, we made slow progress through the herds of cattle, donkeys and goats that thronged the highway, until we finally reached the land of the Konso. The Hamar women are immediately identifiable by their brick red hair braids, beautiful beaded jewelry and animal skin clothes designed to imitate gazelles.

One of the established ways to evaluate self-cognition in animals (including humans) is the mirror test. In the classic test, an animal is anesthetized and then marked on an area of the body the animal cannot normally see. When the animal recovers from the anesthetic, it is given access to a mirror.
