As you read this, I am riding my trusty Grizzly Bear through the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park, helping my colleague Seagull Steve find some new birds. Birding by bear is by far the best way to view the park, although it seems to terrify the hoofed animals. How is your August progressing?

We quickly came upon a pair of Gray Jays, a lifer, hopping through the technicolor birches and I set up to try to take a few photos when my companion yelled out, “BEAR!” ” A mid-sized Grizzly Bear was slowly making its way along the opposite bank of the river. Because that’s what animals do in Alaska.

Whenever one thinks about Yellowstone, the first though for the majority of folks is probably the animals. You know, the Bison, Elk, Bears and Wolves. We did not ever see a Grizzly Bear, but we did see a Black Bear , although it was way too far away for a picture.
