The Sperm Whale is the fourth largest whale, and the largest toothed whale (and animal) in the world. Sperm Whales feed deep, diving to the bottom of the trench, hunting for a while, then rising again to catch a breath. The star of Kaikoura is the Sperm Whale , ( Physeter macrocephalus ). I always seem to see Kaikoura at dawn.

They get a bad rap due to their dependence on carrion to survive, but I look at it a different way: these species do not have to kill in order to thrive! It’s true, they prey on baby or weak animals as well, but carrion makes up the majority of their diet. I love condors and vultures. Most humans cannot say that.

Whenever I read about dolphins in places like Sea World, I think of an ex-co-worker named Gretchen who admitted she had "issues" with animals. Once penned, some dolphins are picked out by dolphin trainers and animal brokers for purchase and transport to amusement parks and resorts. The cries of the dolphins are pathetic.

Finally, if you know someone who gravitates toward the philosophical issues around our use of animals, this is a good book. Ever, in fact. Not great, but good. Imagine being served a plate of sushi.
